Below Decks Stairs: Sturdy Platforms are a must

When buying a boat what gear you have below decks is as important as that above for most people. From the deck it is usual to descend down a few steep steps. If these are solidly built and of wooden construction the impression of quality is almost immediately put in the prospective buyers mind. Solid wood trims placed around the cabin also adds to this impression as well as providing useful hand holds on those more difficult passages. The galley should be well laid out; a U-shape is very popular, with everything in easy reach for the cook. Double catches on doors is essential as well as secure stowage for all small items and kitchen utensils. A chart table is still a must even if passages are short. Comfortable saloon seating and clear views out are very desirable especially for all those fantastic anchorages that will be visited. Finally cabins that have full size beds are ideal but often with the unusual spaces forward this is not always possible and V-beds are often the norm.
