You should know exactly what type of engine you require, is it a shaft outboard engine? Do you want it to be 2 stroke or 4 stroke? And if you’re unsure, checking with your boats manufacturer or even just a boat expert can be really useful.

With a used boat engine, it’s not possible to tell just how well it works by looking at it. If it looks to clean and polished but its several years old, then it may have been cleaned up too much by the owners, and there should be typical signs of wear with a boat engine, and if you see these signs it can actually be quite reassuring.
