Maintaining a Teak Boat Deck

Keeping a boat teak decking clean and maintained can be a difficult task. Still, it is undoubtedly one that should be done regularly, not only to ensure it stays looking great but to ensure that the non-slip properties of a teak deck remains just that, non-slip.

Here are our top 2 tips on how to ensure your teak deck remains shipshape.

Don’t scrub the deck

Traditionally, sailors were told to ‘scrub the deck’, but this is not true with a teak deck.  Teak is made up of hard and soft elements, and by scrubbing it, you risk scrubbing away the more delicate parts of the wood, causing your once smooth deck to become rough and grooved.  Instead, wash the deck weekly with a mild detergent and a soft sponge or brush.  For stubborn stains, we recommend an oxalic acid solution.  Dissolve a few crystals into warm water, but beware not to inhale the fumes and wear gloves.  It won’t harm anything on the boat, but it will burn your skin!  This weekly regime will ensure that any dirt does not become ingrained into the wood, and you won’t wear down the teak.

Cover up!

Although boat covers can be expensive initially, they will save you money in the long run.  This is because you won’t need your boards replacing as often and, should you come to sell the boat, you may get a little bit more for it as it’s obvious you have cared for your boat.

Remember that if you do not maintain your teak deck, you may have to resort to sanding, which can thin your desk and cause a whole new set of issues.
